Golden, triangular and with 8,000 holes 2012 London Olympics torch revealed for first time.
The torch that will be used for next year's London Olympics was revealed Wednesday in the British capital.
In this undated handout image released on June 8, 2011 by the The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), the London 2012 Olympic Torch prototype is pictured. The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay will take the Olympic Flame on an 8,000 mile journey across the UK next summer.

Designed at a London-based studio, the torch features 8,000 holes representing each person who will run the relay during the flame's journey throughout the United Kingdom. The triangular shape is a nod to the three Olympics London will have hosted.

London's flame will be lit next May in Greece before embarking on a two-month relay before the opening ceremony on July 27, 2012. It will travel over 8,000 miles and be carried by more than 8,000 torchbearers.

The traditional design is an improvement over the more modern torches that have been used in recent Olympics. The lace-like pattern is reminiscent of the chain mail armor that could have been used by Beowulf or a member of King Arthur's court. And though the shape looks more like something that would be used by Michael Phelps at Bonnaroo, on the whole it's a winning design, which is a bigger deal than it sounds like seeing as how London completely whiffed on both the Olympic logo and mascots. elf tour.

Buckingham Palace's 19 state rooms, ballroom and gardens are open to visitors during August and September while the Queen makes her annual visit to Balmoral.

The State rooms house some of the Royal family's greatest treasures including paintings and the finest French and English furniture. Visit the spectacular Palace Ballroom and tour the Palace gardens with views of the west front of the Palace and the lake.

There is an entry fee and tickets are limited so you should book ahead if possible.

Best Place to Visit United Kingdom

1. Buckingham Palace
The Buckingham Palace is home to Queen Elizabeth II when she is staying in the city. There are hundreds of years of Royal heritage all under one roof.

2. London Eye
Surprisingly new to London , but the London Eye has rapidly become a major London icon. It is a great way to see and rejoice at the beautiful city.

3. Tower of London
This is one of the oldest relics from London 's history. Harking back to William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066, this very famous tower has seen many executions, including Anne Boleyn (second wife of King Henry VIII).

4. Covent Garden
A really vibrant square with a great collection of shops offering tea, clothes, jewelery. There has been a market here for the last 500+ years, and sometimes it is as though the past echoes of traders past are still around! If you are lucky, you can catch a live performance of opera, music or jugglers.

5. Trafalgar Square
Since the pigeons have been banned from the square, it has lost some of its grubby character. But the gleaming, pigeon-free square has Nelson's column, and of course the water fountains. The National Gallery, Chinatown and St James' Park are all a short walk away.

6. Hyde Park
One of the biggest in London with a lake for a leisurely boating experience. Go for a jog, relaxing stroll or bird watching (of the winged kind!)

7. Oxford Street
Even though some parts of this famous street need a lick of paint, it is still a huge attraction for the sheer variety of shops. A favourite is Selfridges, on the marble arch side.

8. St Paul 's cathedral
Designed by Sir Christopher Wren but had to be partly rebuilt after World War II, it is a stunning piece of architectural genius.

9. Houses of Parliament
If you wan to see the epicenter of British politics, the Houses of Parliament is the ideal place to see the policy-making centre. Not to forget the machinations, ef tours, back biting and power games played within these walls.
